Second Grade Symmetry Lesson

Wyoming Standards Addressed in this Symmetry Lesson
Content Standard 1 Reading
Content Standard Speaking and Listening
Content Standard 2 Writing
Math: G.2.1, G2.2, G.2.3, D.2.1, D.2.2

The anticipitory set: Teacher will read a story related to symmetry. IE: Reflections by Ann Jonas  A short discussion should follow using I noticed statements.
The teacher will then ask the students about what they already know about symmetry.  Relate symmetry to self and life. IE: skateboarding, art

Students will be given pre-cut paper letters of the alphabet to fold and manipulate to determine which ones have lines of symmetry.  Students are asked to make predictions about the letters and lines of symmetry.

After the students tell their classmates about their letter, the letters will then be placed on a chart/graph in the proper category. IE: symmetrical or not symmetrical

Extension Activities:  Include the use of pattern blocks to create a symmetrical flower using as many shapes as desired. The students draw lines of symmetry on their flower and color it.
Next, they chart what shapes they used, and how many of each they used. They will then count and record the number of faces and corners.
A writing activity will follow asking them to use mathematical language to describe what symmetry is and how they used it in their flower activity.
Correctives and Enrichments:  Several worksheets including drawing lines of symmetry, shading the mirror image of patterns, finishing patterns...can be utilized as follow-up activities.

This web site is interactive and is great to use with a Smart Board.

Bounce and Count
Have students sit or stand in a circle
Give a child a ball and whisper a number to them.  The child bounces the ball that number of times while everyone counts.
This continues until everyone has had a turn.
